Using Humorous Videos to Make a Point

Some people are visual; others like words. I fall into the former category, as I discovered the other day when I was showing a colleague the work of a company called Xplane, which specializes in visual communications. To me, the changes they made to an otherwise boring methodology roadmap and a VSM (value stream map) made the documents more meaningful and easier to understand. My colleague, a writer at heart, preferred the original versions, with more words and fewer pictures.

Of course, everyone has their own preferences. It’s interesting that these preferences also dictate learning styles. Some people learn better by reading, some by seeing, some by doing, some by listening and repeating. That’s why, when it comes to presenting and teaching, the best facilitators work to address all learning styles.

One way to do this is to spice up the presentation or lecture with visual aids. Videos, especially if they have a bit of humor, are a good way to engage people and also lighten the mood. Here are two of my favorites:

This basketball video is useful for reminding people to focus on the big picture.

The Suburban Auto Trunk Monkey videos feature some very funny outside-the-box creative strategies.

Enjoy!
