A New Strategy for Nationalization

I recently presented at the Saudi HR Summit in Jeddah, where I had the pleasure of meeting many professionals in charge of corporate training and employee development. During my presentation and my post-event workshop, I took the opportunity to speak about Nationalization. In particular, I focused on how governments and businesses can design sustainable Nationalization plans using an approach called Hoshin Planning.

What is Hoshin Planning? In essence, it enables leaders to define long-term goals that can be achieved through measurable milestones. In the context of Nationalization, this means agreeing on a vision for the future, and then building an action plan with specific objectives at many levels. Each objective is assigned ownership, and the plan is revisited often to make sure objectives are being met.

What makes Hoshin Planning so powerful, however, is its ability to engage people at all levels – from the highest echelons of government and business to employees, students and everyday citizens. The key is understanding and using the WIIFM principle (What’s In It For Me?). Like it or not, most people aren’t very motivated to provide their support unless there is something “in it” for them. If this basic principle of human nature is neglected when setting Nationalization strategy, the plan will have a hard time coming to fruition.

Hoshin Planning leverages built-in tools that remind us to consider WIIFM for everyone who will be affected by the Nationalization strategy. In this way, it increases participation and buy-in, and the possibility of the plan succeeding.
